Doug’s Story -

My parents started Herbert Construction Co., a concrete construction company, in Michigan in 1978.  I grew up in the family business, learning at the dinner table and on the job during summer break from school.

I worked at the company throughout college and then became a full-time employee.  I took the normal track of most kids that grow up in the foundation industry: gopher, laborer, right-hand man, and then Foreman.  I handled our layout and then moved inside the office as estimator, project manager, and salesman.

Once I began handling all of our sales, advertising and marketing, I realized that most of the money we spent on marketing was wasted on things that didn’t work.  But, I didn’t know what to do or what would work to increase our sales.

We would spend a bunch of money on an advertisement and then not get any new work from it.  This happened over and over.  It was really frustrating.  I got tired of being an advertising victim to every yellow pages, newspaper and radio salesman that walked through our door.

I decided that if our company was going to get bigger and be more profitable, I had to figure out how to effectively market our services.  I learned everything I could about sales and marketing.  I read dozens of books, attended multiple seminars & workshops.  Then, I began to implement what I was learning into our business.  Through a lot of trial and error, I found out what works – and what doesn’t work.

The more I learned and the better I got at sales and marketing, the more our sales and profits grew.  Our company got bigger and bigger.

Later, it was the knowledge and use of these effective marketing systems that was one of the reasons our company was able to stay in business during the Great Recession.  Despite a 92% reduction in the market at our Atlanta headquarters, our company survived while many good companies went out of business.

Today, that construction company continues to get new customers and increase market share with the sales and marketing systems that I have refined over many years.

However, I know that there are a lot of good concrete contractors across the nation that are still struggling to get new customers and increase their sales.  I am now sharing what I’ve learned because concrete contractors work too hard and risk too much for too little profit.  That is why I created Profitable Contractor.

Our Mission at Profitable Contractor is to show good contractors how to increase their sales and profits through the use of simple, effective systems.
